Demos for Book Chapter Number as a primary perceptual attribute in Numerical Cognition: Debates and Disputes

Adaptation to numerosity.

Fixate the central red dot. After displaying the two test gratings (each containing 30 dots) the video displays 100 dots to the right and 10 to the left, for 10 s, then the two test patterns again. The one on the right (adapted to 100 dots) should appear less numerous than that to the right.

Adaptation to moving stimuli.

Moving stimuli are effective adaptors for numerosity, both for subsequent stationary stimuli, and moving stimuli.

Spatial overlap.

Strong adaptation occurs even when there is no spatial overlap of the adaptor and test dots (contrary to predictions of “old news”). There was no measurable difference between fully overlapped, partially overlapped and non-overlapped dots. The yellow dots of the final shot show the position of the adaptors, blue the position of the test.

Color specificity.

Adapt to a numerous field of blue dots, then test with blue dots: strong effect. Readapt and test with green dots: weaker effect.
